Somebody forgot to tell Pittsburgh there was a baseball game Monday.
I’m watching the bonus coverage on ESPN of Marlins at Pirates, A’s and Yanks were rained out, and it appears that Pirates fans were unaware that a game was scheduled for tonight (that assumes there are Pirates fans). I have never seen so few people in the stands at a baseball game.
According to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette’s Pirates blog there may not even be 200 fans in attendance, and I believe them.
I guess it’s possible it’s because of the weather, there was a 13 minute rain delay to begin the game, but it doesn’t seem that awful. There’s no Penguins game tonight. The Marlins have the best record in all of baseball. It must just be that the Pirates are God awful and have pretty much been so since losing Barry Bonds. Oh well, Steelers football begins in about 4-5 months.
Update.
According to ESPN the attendance for the game was 8,790. This must obviously be based on ticket sales as there was no way there were that many people in the stands at any point during the game.

My Cubbies on the other hand will fill the stands even when a game is rained out:)
Yup, and your Cubbies have exactly as many WS Titles as the Buccos over the last 16 years…
And yet the Pirates have won something worth mentioning in the last – oh, century.
its really amazing what they have done with this once proud franchise. i may go attend a game, why not!.
Great minds think alike as snatchsports also wrote a nice piece on this.
